Hi. I’m Megan Besemer.

My Education:

At Aquinas College I double majored in Psychology and Sociology- studying people as individuals and in cultural groups. I played volleyball there for four years, was co-captain for two years, and still hold athletic records. I’m a dedicated teammate, hard worker, and leader. At Grand Valley State University I earned a Master of Social Work, graduating with honors.

My Interests:

I love hiking, rustic camping with my husband and two children, traveling, yoga, meditation, listening to music, connecting to spirituality, and connecting with others. Athletically I enjoy weight-lifting, running, and cycling to clear my mind, feel empowered, and be healthy.

My Work History:

After earning a bachelor’s degree I helped families with custody, parenting time, and child support at Kent County Friend of the Court. Next I provided intake, assessment, individual therapy, process therapy groups and psychoeducational groups at Our Hope, a women’s substance abuse treatment center. While there I co-created an acupuncture detoxification clinic for the organization. At the YWCA I was a therapist working with children, teens, and families surviving domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, and sexual assault. All these experiences prepared me to co-create a private practice called Heartwood Counseling LLC, where I served children, teens, and adults working on mental health in Grand Rapids for nine years. I’m excited to introduce my new private practice, Sacred Ground Counseling LLC: helping to empower children, teens, and adults in mental health therapy, and offering supplemental acupuncture detoxification.
